Experience Plus
It’s no secret that older workers are often at a disadvantage in the current economy. Workers age 45 and older are disproportionately represented in the ranks of the long-term unemployed – those unemployed for 6 months or longer. In addition, older workers frequently encounter more difficulty finding work, or even winning an interview. On average, those 55 or older remain unemployed 8.5 weeks longer than younger workers, with about 12% more older workers remaining unemployed 27 weeks or more.
Research shows that this is not a new phenomenon. Older workers are expensive. Company-loyal by nature and training, older workers tend to be relatively high-paid, and their medical and retirement benefits can be viewed by employers as a drain on the bottom line. Combined with the perception that older workers are technology-phobic and resistant to change, the barriers to employment faced by the older worker can seem daunting.
At ProNet, we understand the challenges facing the older unemployed worker. Whether you are mid-career or seeking to return to the workforce because of the economy, we are here to help. The Experience Plus group has been formed to provide information, tips, and networking opportunities for the older worker. Revisit this website often, and plan to attend ProNet meetings to network with others who might be able to help.
One more thing – please help us to help you. Join the ProNet forums, ask questions, and suggest topics that we can address in future postings or meetings. Let’s work together to level the field and achieve success!
